Ammonia (NH3) is used in fertilisers and a wide range of industrial applications. It is mostly derived from natural gas, a hydrocarbon source. As a potential marine fuel, when ammonia is created carbon-free by using hydrogen produced by renewable energy, it could one day help to achieve the goal of zero-carbon shipping.

Ammonia is drawing attention as a next-generation clean fuel, although there are major challenges related to the carbon footprint and high infrastructure costs.
